I am so fortunate to be a mathematician / theoretical computer scientist - we always order authors alphabetically. In fact, the described situation (putting somebody just because they are in the same group) would be borderline (?) misconduct in maths / tcs.

The "Become a Master Academic Writer With AI using my course" part of your video description makes me feel that you are contributing to much more evil than you are exposing. Signed: a researcher in pure maths where almost every statement you make is blatantly false.

This is great but sometimes theres just some projects that are fundamentally not gonna be explained with figures, no way out. Plus some of these examples would just not fly at some university departments and get downgraded for being too artsy.

Please do a review. And maybeeee you could even do a full tutorial on how to do a Literature Review with the help of NotebookLM. THANK YOOOOU :)

My supervisor has always been into micromanaging, and enjoyed using his passive-aggressive attitude to get us in line. When I was writing my PhD thesis, considering that he had another PhD student that was his favourite, he offered me to read one chapter of my thesis, "because he had no time". I was shocked and I said that reading just one chapter would not change anything. The day of my PhD defence I got a lot of questions, some were related to how the thesis was structured and to the English (I'm not an English native speaker), but the commission liked my work and it was a success (with tons of suggestions on how to restructure it and fix the English). Later, when I was collecting my stuff in the lab, my supervisor came back and said he was happy that "our work" was met with interest and that I should leave him a copy of the thesis. So, surprising even myself, I told him: "F., choose a chapter, and I will leave it on the desk". He became angry and left. I thought he was the exception in the academic world: I was wrong. 15 years after I decided that I could not stand it anymore, and I left. Every day I wonder what it took me so long to leave the academia: I should have done it earlier.

where is the extraordinary evidence for pedantic essay formatting requirements, transgender ideology, and starting classes at ungodly hours in the morning? There's plenty of evidence that schools disproportionately discipline boys over girls and zero tolerance policies are ineffective but thats still a thing in academia.

Thank you for this advice, I am nearing defense and I wish I had heard this at least 3 years ago. One thing that I will add about much of this advice, especially the last bit is why an individual (like myself) might be resistant to acting on this advice: Part of the PhD training is the personal development of an intuitive sense of "rightness". Its easy to say, leave a project behind if its a dead end. It doesnt just take confidence to turn away from a dead end, but the development of an intuitive sense that the evidence you are faced with is evidence of a dead end. Unfortunately...it took me 4 years to recognize that, and by that point, I was too far in to turn back....As you predicted, it lead to a disillusionment with science. I don't think I'm cut out for this any more, and I don't really want to pursue this path after defense.

Entered a book contract with PhD supervisor's colleague (also a PhD student). I had recently finished my PhD and was working overseas. I did the majority of the editing and he cut my name from the book and published it as his own. He refused my phone calls and e-mails and put my name in the acknowledgments.

Andy, thanks for your great vids. Why has nobody built a single app does everything a university student or researcher needs? You know, an all-in-one application (writing, literature research, citation reference management, pdf annotation, note taking, writing, scheduling, collaboration, presentation)? I believe that nobody needs all the bells and whistles some of the existing apps offer, and that instead, what we actually need is intelligent intuitive integration. I want to be able to access all of my research literature and annotated documents and experimental data and notes and citations/references while I work, while I write, while I doodle, while I make collections and view all of these resources in a flexible infinitely expandable living breathing data set, document/presentation builder. All of it always on and everything searchable and intelligently and predictive. It is funny sad that we are all so happy using all this shit software that is functionally equivlent to something available on the first Xerox PaRC Star system almost 50 years ago. All of our apps are stove pipes, none speak to each-other in any meaningful way, All store documents that are dead unless opened within that particular app. What the F? Do you know of any such software or platform? Is almost as if academic types get off on the difficulty and inscrutability of the tools and process. Technological hazing?

I always plan assuming failure so if crap hits the fan i can move on to the other options. Alos the lack of a significant result is still a result. Only exception is health and safety if you are not trained in something ask any avaliable lab manager to train you up to make sure you caj do the thing safely. Dont try equipment you know nothing about if you where not trained. It could result in an deadly mistake or an exoensive one. But with that its take the darn initiative and ask for the training. (I working my PHD in disease mycology with diseases that can kill me or another person if i screw up lol cant be infected but the toxins they produce are deadly if breathed in or ingested in large enough quantities so i take that stuff with great caution but still move forward)
